Options and Endings

It's official: Cue up Mannywood in LA for 2010! Slugger Manny Ramirez has decided to exercise his option worth $20M for 2010 to remain with the Dodgers. The Dodgers have now partially handled one of the biggest moves of their offseason. Their FA list is extensive, but comprised of role-players. Jason Schmidt is expected to retire, Randy Wolf is seeking big money, and Vincente Padilla is recovering from his gun incident. Now the Dodgers can focus on Manny's extension and filling role players lost spots while saving $40M roughly.

Elsewhere around the league, The Nationals declined Austin Kearns option (Believe me, he's not worth $10M). The Rockies decline C Yorvit Torrealba and reliever Alan Embree's options. Chone Figgins and Vlad Guerrero have officially turned in their FA papers. Erik Bedard's disaster of a season in Seattle is over by filing his papers. The Phillies have contacted reliever Chan Ho Park's agent and are waiting on results for Scott Eyre's elbow surgery. It is speculated if DH Matt Stairs returns, it'll be a minor league deal. Pedro Martinez and INF Miguel Cairo have also filed for free agency. I'm surprised the Phils may let Pedro walk away after the monumental comeback he gave them this season.

The Red Sox appear to be in some hot water. Remaining options are: Victor Martinez, Jason Varitek, Alex Gonzalez, and Tim Wakefield. I expect they will pick up V-Mart and Wake (Nov.10th deadline), but highly doubt Tek's and have a trace amount of doubt A-Gon's( Monday is the deadline) will be. Also, they have all but alienated themselves with Josh Beckett's agent. We could be seeing the last of Beckett this season in a Sox uni. If that is the case, the Sox should be thinking about John Lackey or Andy Pettite(has yet to file). The Sox have exclusively until Nov.20th to strike a deal with JayBay. It's all but certain, Billy Wagner will retire or go somewhere else. The Sox are only talking about retaining Takashi Saito at this point between Wagner and Paul Byrd. However, Epstein and co. are waiting for the results of his surgery. OF Rocco Baldelli is a free agent. Boston would love to have him back, but with obtaining Hermida, it's more than likely Baldelli's headed for a new gig.

Other notable players with options remaining to be picked up: OF Carl Crawford of the Rays, SS Jack Wilson of the M's, Rafael Betancourt of the Indians, and C Ramon Hernandez of the Reds.
