Close of Spring Training: Boston Red Sox

While I'm admittedly behind on this(seeing as the Sox concluded spring on Wednesday in a thumping 14-6 win), some developments took longer. Firstly, the final two bullpen spots have been won by Scott Atchinson and Scott Schoenweiss. Joe Nelson will begin the season in the minors if he elects to stick around as well as Alan Embree. Unfortunately an exciting arm to have in your organization will be shut down for 2010 -- Junichi Tazawa. Tazawa has had season-ending Tommy John surgery on his right elbow.

It appear Mike Lowell isn't going anywhere after weeks of speculation that the deal between the Rangers and Sox would be re-visited. The Rangers claimed Ryan Garko yesterday which would render Lowell useless on their bench. The only possible suitor that makes sense is the Mets.

The bumps and bruises crew include Jacoby Ellsbury, David Ortiz, Kevin Youkilis, and Dustin Pedroia. All are expected to be healthy and ready to go for Sunday's opener.

Rumor through various news outlets says the Sox and Josh Beckett are close to a four year $68M contract. I'll believe it when I see it. After reviewing the list of FA pitchers the next two years, the Sox must re-sign Beckett.
